Transforming Masculinities – Masculinities, Faith and Peace: Muslim Version

Category: Men and Masculinity

Subcategory: Training Manuals and materials

Abstract

Developed specifically for Muslim communities, this practical training manual adapts Tearfund's internationally recognised Transforming Masculinities programme to draw on Islamic teachings that promote justice, compassion, mutual respect and peaceful family relationships. Designed for Muslim Gender Champions, faith leaders and community facilitators, the resource explores how harmful gender norms can be challenged through Qur'anic reflection, dialogue and community engagement. It also includes practical guidance on promoting social cohesion and respectful relationships in communities where Christians and Muslims live alongside one another.
Rather than presenting gender equality as a foreign concept, the manual demonstrates how core Islamic values of mercy (rahmah), justice (adl) and human dignity provide a strong foundation for positive masculinity. It encourages men to become protectors of dignity rather than privilege, and leaders through service rather than domination. For interfaith organisations, the resource provides an excellent example of how Islamic scholarship and community practice can contribute meaningfully to the prevention of gender-based violence while strengthening relationships across faith communities.
