Teaching Positive Masculinity as a Solution to End Gender-Based Violence

Abstract

Published during South Africa's Human Rights Day commemorations, this article argues that one of the most effective ways to address gender-based violence is to invest in boys and men before violence takes root. Featuring insights from Craig Wilkinson, Founder and CEO of Father A Nation, the article explores how harmful ideas about masculinity contribute to violence, fatherlessness and social fragmentation. Rather than simply responding to the consequences of abuse, it advocates for a preventative approach that equips boys with positive role models and helps them develop into men of integrity, empathy and responsibility.
The article presents positive masculinity as a force for protecting rather than dominating others. It highlights the important role that fathers, mentors, teachers, faith leaders and community members play in shaping the next generation of men.
