Freedom Day, Faith, and Gender Justice: Addressing GBV

By Dr Leonora Alberts Vilakazi

Gender-Based Violence (GBV) is a significant obstacle to achieving gender justice and true freedom. On Freedom Day, we must acknowledge the devastating impact of GBV on individuals, communities, and society as a whole.

GBV’s Impact:

GBV perpetuates inequality, reinforces patriarchal norms, and has severe physical, emotional, and psychological consequences for survivors.

Faith Community’s Role:

Faith communities can play a crucial role in addressing GBV by promoting a culture of respect, empathy, accountability, and providing support to survivors.

Breaking the Silence:

Faith leaders and organisations can help break the silence around GBV, encouraging survivors to speak out and seek help, and advocating for policies and practices that protect women’s rights.

Path to Freedom:

True freedom cannot exist without freedom from violence. By working together to address GBV, we can create a society where women and girls can live without fear and thrive.
