Religious Leaders Promote Gender Equality and Prevent Domestic Violence

Abstract

This case study describes a project in Moldova that trained religious leaders to promote gender equality and prevent domestic violence. Ten religious leaders participated in training and subsequently facilitated discussions with parishioners in their communities. The initiative was implemented through the EU 4 Gender Equality programme, jointly implemented by UN Women and UNFPA, demonstrating how faith leaders can become active partners in prevention rather than limiting their role to responding after violence occurs.
The resource provides a practical example of using the influence and reach of religious institutions to challenge gender stereotypes and strengthen community responses to domestic violence. It is particularly relevant for faith-based organisations working in rural or underserved communities, where religious leaders may be among the most accessible and trusted community actors. It also provides a useful example of integrating faith leadership, gender equality education, community dialogue and survivor support.
