Relationships are building blocks to social justice: Biblical justice and African Ubuntu

Category: Social Justice and Faith

Subcategory: Academic Articles

Abstract

This article explores the connection between the African concept of Ubuntu — “I am because we are” — and biblical ideas of justice. Rather than seeing justice as rules and punishment alone, the author argues that both Ubuntu and the Bible emphasize relationships as central to human dignity and community wellbeing. Caring, compassion, and shared humanity are presented as the foundations of a just society where everyone belongs and contributes.

The article offers an accessible explanation of how African cultural wisdom and Christian faith both call for restorative justice, healing broken relationships, and empowering the vulnerable. For readers interested in both theology and African ethical systems, this resource highlights how faith and cultural values can together nurture compassionate, accountable communities.
