Abstract
Across Africa and around the world, there is growing recognition that men are essential partners in building communities where women and girls can live free from violence. In this thoughtful article, Dr Beatrice Onoja reflects on her experience as a participant in the MenEngage Africa and WILPF Gender, Peace and Security Training Institute. She explores how ideas of masculinity shape the way men relate to women, children and one another, and argues that healthier models of manhood are vital for achieving both gender equality and lasting peace.
Rather than portraying masculinity as something negative, the article encourages readers to imagine forms of manhood rooted in empathy, justice, accountability and service. It acknowledges that many men also experience pressure to conform to harmful stereotypes and invites them to become allies in transforming these norms. Faith leaders and communities will find valuable encouragement to engage men not through blame, but through hope, dialogue and shared responsibility for creating safer homes and more compassionate societies.
