Female Faith Leaders Must Have Greater Voice in Fight Against Gender-Based Violence

Abstract

This recent African resource highlights the role of women faith leaders in preventing gender-based violence, supporting survivors and challenging harmful social norms. It reports on a high-level dialogue convened by the International Gender Champions Nairobi Hub together with World Vision East Africa and Plan International. Participants called for women faith leaders to be recognised not only as pastoral caregivers but also as policy influencers, decision-makers and strategic partners in efforts to end GBV.
The resource is particularly valuable for its focus on women's leadership within faith institutions. Women faith leaders often have trusted relationships with women, girls and families affected by violence, yet remain underrepresented in decision-making spaces. The article makes the case for greater investment in their leadership and for faith institutions to create meaningful opportunities for women to influence policy, challenge harmful norms and contribute to GBV prevention.
