Developing a Theology of Discernment in Response to the Abuse of Religion by Some Pentecostal Churches in Postcolonial South Africa

Abstract

This article examines how some Pentecostal leaders misuse religious power in South Africa, leading to spiritual abuse through manipulation, fear, and exploitation. Kgatle proposes a theology of discernment to help believers evaluate spiritual claims critically.

The article emphasizes empowerment, accountability, and education as key tools for resisting harmful religious authority and restoring healthy faith practice.
