Abstract
This article addresses documents how in some cases, church leaders or pastors themselves become perpetrators of violence, using their spiritual authority to silence or control victims. The author explores how the power dynamics within congregations, combined with fear and reverence toward religious leaders, may discourage victims from speaking up. She argues that the betrayal of trust by spiritual leaders deepens psychological harm and undermines the very safety that places of worship should represent.
The article also reviews church-based responses: some congregations have started training clergy in trauma awareness, promoting accountability, and establishing safe reporting channels within faith communities. The author stresses the need for theological reflection that challenges hierarchical authority unchecked, and invites congregations to reclaim their role as protectors and defenders of victims.
