Abstract
Youth Changing the River's Flow" is a facilitator's guide for gender transformation training. The guide aims to empower young people to challenge and change societal norms and attitudes around gender. The title "Righting the Gender Story" suggests that the current narrative around gender is flawed and needs to be corrected.
The guide focuses on helping young people to recognize and challenge the gender stereotypes and biases that they may have internalized. It encourages them to think critically about the gender norms they have grown up with and to consider alternative perspectives. The training is designed to be interactive and participatory, with activities such as group discussions, role-playing, and creative exercises.
The guide acknowledges that gender is a complex and multifaceted concept that intersects with other social identities such as race, class, and sexuality. It encourages facilitators to consider these intersections when delivering the training, in order to create a more inclusive and nuanced understanding of gender.
The facilitator’s guide is intended to be both a learning and facilitation resource for master trainers, district trainers as well as community and youth facilitators involved in gender transformative work. Master trainers, trained directly by SAfAIDS and Sonke Gender Justice, will use this manual to train community leaders, parents and community members, youth peer facilitators, teachers and other school staff at district level.
